Mortgage lending still remains tight

Tough economic times for high-street retailers

Two of Britain’s biggest high-street names revealed yesterday just how rocky the Christmas shopping period had been, with sales slumping as the recession bit really hard.

Debenhams and Next admitted that retailers are in the grip of the toughest trading condition for decades. But there was fighting talk too, with retailer Next arguing that predictions of a complete high streets wipeout are exaggerated and Debenham insisting it will emerge as a winner from the current economic crisis. London property market crashes

London house prices crashed by an average 14.5 per cent in the last 12 months the fall accelerated through “a year of turmoil” with a drop of 2.4 per cent last month alone.

Ban on UK short selling to be lifted

The 2008 ban on short selling of shares in Britain is to be lifted, according to the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) stated the ban would expire as planned on 16 January, despite calls from MPs to keep it in place. But rules requiring the full disclosure of “short” trading positions will be kept for an additional six months, the FSA said. Read more

British Interest rates are set to hit a record low by the end of the week as the Bank of England struggles with a deepening recession.

The Bank’s official rate has never dropped below the current 2 per cent in its 315 year history, but financial experts predict a cut of as much as 1 per cent by Thursday as the Britain faces up to its worst economic year since the early 1990s. Read more
